Human freedom is a complex, difficult-and private- thing. If we can liken life, for a moment, to a furnace, then freedom is the fire which burns away illusion. Any honest examination of the national life proves how far we are from the standard of human freedom with which we began. The recovery of this standard demands of everyone who loves this country a hard look at himself, for the greatest achievements must begin somewhere, and they always begin with the person. If we are not capable of this examination, we may yet become one of the most distinguished and monumental failures in the history of nations.

It’s hard to find words for what is and has been going on in this country. I’m at a loss for what to say as I watch the images of the Great American Experiment literally go up in flames. As the richest nation in the world with almost endless resources, we can’t find the decency to give our black and brown brothers and sisters the basic tenants of humanity: equal opportunity to health care, an education, the peace of mind that their children can go jogging without being hunted down by ignorant white men!!! We brought this on ourselves. I’m pissed, and hurt, and ashamed. Fuck!
